Quick US Immigration Question

Post by Joshy » Fri May 22, 2009 2:16 pm

Hi all,

In the next couple of weeks, I'll receive a residency visa to stay in the US.

This is NOT a green card although I can apply for one once in the US.

I am English, but my step-mother is American and she sponsored me for the visa.

My question is this: what are the restrictions on leaving the US, for a few months at a time, once I enter with the visa?

My understanding is that the initial visa lasts somewhere between 6 and 12 months and is extended unconditionally if I'm still in the US.

What I'm struggling to come to terms with is whether I can enter the US, leave shortly after, and still come back and get an extension to the visa?
I can't find any information of this anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

- J.

Impossible to say, without knowing what type of visa you have.
