Register child born in India, parents are already naturalised

Post by rajcp1 » Mon Jun 22, 2026 5:09 pm

Hello everyone,

I am completing an online Form MN1 application to register my 10-year-old daughter as a British citizen, and I am hitting a confusing section regarding the legal category to select. I would appreciate some guidance on the correct pathing.

Our Situation:

Child's Background: Born in India, 10 years old, has held Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK for the last 2 years.

Parents' Status: Both my wife and I are British citizens. I naturalised a year ago, and my wife naturalised a month ago. We were both originally Indian citizens. We didnt include our daughter along with our applications due to some travel engagements.

The Issue on the Online Form:
When filling out the application, because she was born outside the UK, it takes me to the "Consideration under British Nationality Act" page. It presents a list of radio buttons, including:

Options regarding parents being British by descent (which don't apply to us).

"One or both of your parents is applying for British citizenship"(which don't apply to us).

"Other - apply at the discretion of the Home Secretary"

I tried to use the last option "Other- apply at the discretion of the Home Secretary" and further along the lines it asks about Grand Parent details where it asks as below:

Grandparent details
Provide details of your grandparent from whom your mother or father derived British citizenship by descent.

This is also not applicable to us.. And when we review document checklist before final submission it asks for Grand Parent passport/Marriage Certificate etc which we dont have.

Any guidance will be much appreciated..

You select option "Other". It is the only route applicable to your child born abroad.

Ignore grandparent information. It isn't relevant for the child.
