Renouncing British Citizenship NI?

Post by shrh8795 » Sun Mar 15, 2015 1:19 pm

Hi all, just registered after to reading through the site I need some advice!
I was born and lived in Belfast my whole life, I've always identified myself as Irish, my past two passports have been Irish. However,
I think my mother had a British Passport for me as a child since it was faster at that time.
My question now is, I'm marrying a US citizen in a few months, originally we were going to apply for a visa for me to live in the states after marrying but I have since gotten an offer for a job/training that lasts 3 years. My partner is willing to move here but we're confused as to how?

Can I renounce British citizenship since I have had a British passport in the past?
I looked at the form, am I a British national, citizen or what?
After I renounce citizenship and continue having Irish passports can I apply for the eea (I think thats it)?
If yes, can he work in the North?

So key details if I was unclear as this is a bit rushed

- I have an Irish passport
-Had a British passport as a young child
- Live and was born in the North not the Republic
- He is from the US
- Can he live and work in Northern Ireland?

Thank you all for the help in advance! I am clueless as we spent our time researching how I can move there!

Can I renounce British citizenship since I have had a British passport in the past? YES; I HAVE DONE SO IN THE PAST
I looked at the form, am I a British national, citizen or what? BRITISH CITIZEN
After I renounce citizenship and continue having Irish passports can I apply for the eea (I think thats it)? YES; YOU WILL HAVE YOUR PARTNER APPLY FOR AN EEA FAMILY PERMIT
If yes, can he work in the North? YES; MY CHINESE PARTNER IS WORKING IN NI NOW AFTER GETTING THE EEA FAMILY PERMIT AND THEN THE RESIDENCE CARD AFTER BEING HERE FOR A FEW MONTHS

So key details if I was unclear as this is a bit rushed

- I have an Irish passport; YOU ALSO HAVE BRITISH CITIZENSHIP
-Had a British passport as a young child NO CONSEQUENCE; YOU WERE BORN IN THE UK SO YOU STILL ARE A BRITISH CITIZEN, LIKE IT OR NOT!
- Live and was born in the North not the Republic; ME TOO
- He is from the US; MINE IS FROM CHINA
- Can he live and work in Northern Ireland?; YES, AFTER THE RENUNCIATION.

Thank you all for the help in advance! I am clueless as we spent our time researching how I can move there!
