Is it possible to be granted this visa without having bought my onwards ticket to leave the UK?

I am fromNew Zealand, currently in the UK on a Workign Holiday Maker Visa. My situation is as follows:

My current visa expires on the 2nd October. I have purchased a RETURN ticket to go back to NZ for the first time in 2 years to catch up with family, friends etc, which departs on the 25th October and returns to the UK on the 16th November.

The reason I am not planning leave the UK until 3 weeks after my WHM visa expires is because I am travelling with a friend who could not travel until this date.

When i return on, my intention is to spend a short period of time in England before heading off to complete my travels in Europe. I have not bought my forwarding ticket to Europe as I have not finalised my plans yet.

What do you think? Will an accompanying letter of explanation be enough? Will it be nessacary for me to enclose my return ticket to nz with my application?
