Right of Abode and tourist visa??

I have a New Zealand passport, I've lived in the UK for 7 years with right of abode - I carry the certificate in an expired passport which has been fine for travelling but I'm applying for a Chinese visa and the visa office say the ROA certificate is expired because the passport has. I need to show entry to the UK too get Chinese visa so if I leave the UK and return but don't show them my right of abode on the way back and instead get a tourist stamp to prove entry, is this fraudulent?
