Right to Abode Visa

Post by aussierebecca » Sun Sep 21, 2008 1:57 pm

I am an Australian living in London and my right to abode visa is about to expire as is my passport. I will appy for my new Australian passport and then my right to abode visa. Does anyone know if I have to send my old passport in with supporting documents to get the new right to abode certificate? I still want to travel with my current passport before it expires and while my new one is processing.

Also, does anyone know how long it takes for the visa to process?

Thanks for your help!

Information about applying for a right of abode certificate is here on the BIA website.

I don't think that you do have to submit your expired passport (but check on that website and its link pages), but I don't think that this will help you to travel while the application is in progress. Once the Australian authorities issue you with your new passport they will cancel your old one (even if it still has time left on it), so you're not going to have the two passports valid concurrently anyway.

The BIA website doesn't give any information about waiting times for right of abode certificates that I can see; on page 8 of the Guide to the Right of Aobde (which you can access from the main page noted above, they suggest that you ring 0845-010-5200 to ask about waiting times.

On what basis is ROA held? Is there an option to become a British citizen?
