Royal Mail Special Delivery and HSMP

Hi guys,

I sent my HSMP app off Monday 29th January using Royal Mail Special Delivery to the following address;

Work Permits (UK) HSMP
PO Box 3975
Sheffield
S1 9BL

I've been a bit concerned since no info has been available confirming delivery. As such I rang Royal Mail and today have been informed that the parcel is in the Sheffield Collection Depot awaiting collection.

Suddenly I'm concerned... is Royal Mail Special Delivery considered a courier? Should I actually have sent it to the address;

? Anyone got any advice? If I've sent it to the wrong place I seriously need to get it back asap so I can get it to them. I've only finite time to get this through. I've emailed the Home Office with this question also, since I'm sure a million people must have sent the app like this. To me, special delivery is just postal...

Any advice anyone has, greatly appreciated.

If you will use Royal Mail's special delivery, use the second address.

You can track online in Royal mail's website....

I also sent through Royal mail special delivery at Sheffield address (1st address). It reached successfully next day only. Ref 205XXX

Special delivery guarantees next day delivery. Check with Royal mail why it is delayed. you can claim for that I hope !!!

Hmm okay, now I really don't know what to expect. I rang Royal Mail again with the intent to change the address to the courier one. They stated it differently this time "the card has been delivered to the PO Box o n the address and the parcel is awaiting collection". Apparently it's been awaiting collection since 30 January - the day after I sent it.

I'll ring every day and if it's not picked up soon Ill try and convince them to do a redelivery.

Could anybody please tell if royal mail special delivery is considered a non-courier service? Can we still send the documents to PO Box address in Durham

No mate Royal mail special delivery is not a courier service .....

But since special delivery is required to take the signature of the recipient may be there is a confusion .....

Check it with the Royal mail guys ... Else ask them to send it back to you and resend it by regular ROyal mail

Or use the courier address for special delivery .... I dont know how well it is feasible ....

Confirmation for everyone - correct, royal mail special delivery is not a courier service, it is a postal service. However there can be a delay in retrieval by the Home Office. My application was received today by the Home Office. That's a mere 8 business days after I posted it. The piece of cardboard that royal mail put in the PO Box was delivered the day after postage apparently.

So.. fingers crossed for the app.

Do you recon I should use royal mail special delivery and send it to the courier address rather than PO Box (bcos of the delay in collection from Po Box by the home office)

Well.. I'd be very cautious about sending it to the courier address. The postal address seems to have worked, and it's worked for others without the delay. I suspect I was simply unlucky.

Given that Special Delivery is technically postal, it should be sent to the postal address according to the Home Office instructions.

The difference between "Special Delivery (SD)" and first class postal service email is that:
- SD is netx day gurantee delevery services.
- You could trace the progress online, you could also have proof that receiver have received your items/documents.
- In delivery method, they do not mix it with other letter. They have special force to deliver this package.

So, conlcusion it is much more secure than normal first class postal
service.


Disadvantage of SD: It is much more expensive than normal postal service.


I am not 100% but I think people should use NON PO box address for SD service, otherwise it will arrive but U do not take full benefit of what U have paid (no proff of delivery).

Resurrect my ancient thread here however I got my approval letter in the mail Saturday 24th Feb.

Thought I'd share the timeline.

Sent: 29th January
Received: 9th February (!! hence this thread!)
Status 20th February: "Not yet assigned to caseworker"
Approval received: 24th February
