Russian citizen wanting to visit non-EU citizen in France

I have a Russian friend who I have invited to come visit me in France. I live and work in France and have a Titre de Sejour and Work permit, but I hold a US passport. The plan is that my friend would come to visit for a short (tourist) visit and stay with me. Can anyone give me some advice on the best way to get a Visa? Can I write an invitation letter or does it have to come from a full citizen? How might I avoid the craziness that could surely result from this non-standard situation?
