Sample UK Management CVs and/or advice

Post by Baadil » Sat Sep 02, 2006 5:19 pm

Hi,

When I was in UK about 4-5 years ago, I found out that UK CVs are much different than the US ones. They added age, merital status etc as well as required different detail styles. I am about to embark on another job search in UK and wanted to find out what your opinions are on how to setup management/director level CV. Also, do you guys have any sample CVs I can look at? I tried looking up on the net and found mixed results. Some show up same as US while others are totally different.

I am looking for the latest style of CVs that is being accepted in UK. I know in US it is a single page CV (max 2) with accomplishments listed with lots and lots of numbers.

Thank you.

Baadil,

If my understanding is correct, there is no hard and fast rule like you think between US & UK. Basically a CV is just like any other marketing tool for a person to proposition himself/herself for a particular job in the job market. Some people(employers or candidates) like to read/write 5-6 pages of CV.

Personally, I prefer reading things that are short. So, if I were an employer/interviewer I would go with a well written, preferably brief but strong message conveying CV , then do a face to face interview to see the strength of the person in real rather than what is said in the CV.

So a strong CV is always good, but I don’t think you need to find samples to put it all together. A well written CV showing strengths & achievements will certainly help you to get near to the employers door, but in order to land on it, you have to be convincing (especially for management/directorial level roles )

There were times IT people used to get hired based on the strength of the CV but that’s far from reality now a days, irrespective of whether US or UK.

Thank you vin for your reply. My experience could be one-off but I was using a decent resume here in the US and had a high success rate. When I used the same resume in UK, it received zero attention. I had to modify my CV a lot before anyone ever called me back. I had to totally make it machine readable and the whole thing looked like a keyword soup. I also had to add my nationality etc (perhaps because of previous US experience) etc.

The main reason I was asking for some samples is not to copy the text but instead learn the layout that is being used in UK right now.
