Schengen Visa - EU/Non-EU Couple

Hi all, was wondering if anyone is this forum could offer some guidance on our situation.

I am a British national and my husband is South African - we currently reside in Ireland. My husband holds a stamp 3, which permits him to reside in Ireland with me for 1 year (but he is not allowed to work in that time. This was granted in September and is vaild until Sept 2008)

We would like to go to Amsterdam for a few days - just a short holiday - in January. I realise that my husband needs a schengen visa for his stay in Amsterdam but I have heard all sorts of conflicting advice regarding how to apply (as from what I have read so far, he may not have to submit quite as much information as he is married to an EU citizen).

Can anyone shed any light on this topic? My main areas of query are -

what supporting documents should we send with the application form?
do we need to book our flights and accomodation before we apply?
I have noticed that the form asks for proof of financial means.. my husband does not have a bank account as he does not work, but I do and I will be funding our trip.. would my bank statement be sufficient? Or does it have to be a statement in his name?

Do check first if he needs an re-entry visa to reenter Ireland.

a stamp 3 is the same principle archigabe - we can holiday without problems.

Being logical is not a strong point with the Irish government. They might still require a re-entry visa even with a stamp3. No harm in checking before you leave :D

South Africans are non-visa required nationals and as such don't require a visa to enter the Republic of Ireland.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

thanks dawie... obviously that website was my first port of reference when investigating this matter. But as we all know by now, embassy websites never tell you the whole story and always give the long way around.

The queries I had are not answered on the website, from what I can see.

You should only have to provide your marriage certificate and the two passports. You are not required to prove financial means or provide travel proof.

They can ask for anything they want, but you do not need to provide it.

Send in the application and see what you get back. Make sure you include a cover letter explaining that this is the spouse of an EU citizen and that you will be travelling together.
