While I see an obvious mistake from your side of not surrendering the passport on time, £3000 sound a but high for a penalty. It usually works the number of trips to India x Penalty £££ I think a better Idea will be to contact the embassy directly and avoid VFS contact as it is a case of exception. ...

Yes this is possible with a written consent from you while you apply for surrender certificate.

The VFS team should be able to guide you.

You will have to produce your British passport at the counter but it will be returned after checking for correctness / DOB etc.

The British passport will then be required only at the last stage where you submit it and collect back.

Standard Visa - 3 to 5 Working days
e-visa - should apply online atleast 72 hours before the travel date but I'm told that usually it only takes 24 hours.

If you use the Indian Passport at either of the borders after getting the British Passport, then you are liable to pay a penalty of 150£ (I think)

Bottomline - You cannot use the grace period of 90 days if you have British Passport in your hand.
