Does this means that i cannot work in UK for IT firm as a software engg?

Hello, I have came to UK in July 2015 on T2 short term dependent visa which is valid till May 2016. Need to know if I am eligible to work in UK till May 2016. Heard from my friend that it is only eligible to work if I have T2 long term dependent visa. So, slightly confused now if I can work or not ...
