We just found out that the Spanish Civil Registry document states that he has a 2nd name, so both names appear in the same official document. That should do it, right?
Do you think it's still necessary to get the marriage recognised by Spain first?

He doesn't have it because this was not really a name change. In Spain your name is the first name followed by the surname of your father and the surname of your mother, so the country chose his surenames for him. What he has is 2 passports with the same picture, birth place, birth date and ...
