... I just thought I would post to let everyone who has given us advice how it went, and to thank you. Also in case anyone here is in any similar circumstances.. if it could help at all knowing how well it went for me, then Im glad to do it :) Thank you very much for writing this up and posting it....

You might be allowed to send a certified copy of the passports and submit those as part of your application for an Irish Residence Card. Not sure though. The UK permits it for some types of home office applications, and it allows you to continue to travel while the application is being processed.

However our own experience was that whilst the Irish Embassy acknowledged that my wife could apply for free, they insisted that my step-daughter's application would need to be paid for. And I could not get them to budge from that inaccurate view, the result was that neither application was submitte...

Irish embassies seem to sometimes allow family members of EU citizens to get visas for free. Other times they seem to charge for the visas.
