I don't think it is valid reason for HO, but I have seen in past that some one got early extension based on their redundency letter. Make sure you present your redundant letter along with your extension letter, this will help you to get early extension from the date of your current leave expiry.

It is 50/50, remember if you didn't get extension from the date of your current leave expiry then you have to get another extension near the time your extended leave expires which means you have to maintain all extension requirement for longer period.
