I think you should avoid signing such contract where you are forced by council to go for joint tenancy. It is to avoid future potential problem with Home Office regarding extensions etc. The Housing council staff usually are trained on basic immigration relating to who is entitle to social housing. ...

Just to add My wife was working previously on 23K now she lost her job. You can claim for Child benefit in your name only without any problem and it shall not affect your wife status or extensions. yes you can apply for Maternity Allowance, it will not affect her extension/ILR. Maternity is not a public benefit.

yes you need to send you ILR Card, Passport and obviously your Child birth certificate, his Biometric card if any and passport. They will dispatch you back after couple of weeks.
