The letter we had explained Directive 2004/38/EC and why my wife did not need visa, all stamped and signed by Maltese consul. Still immigration people looked perplexed.
This was in September 2009.

Before visit I got the letter from Maltese embassy to explain that visa not needed for my wife and good job I did. plus in the case of family-members of EU-citizens it's illegal
If I leave to work let`s say for 2 years outside EU would my wife loose her residence entitlement ?! I am sure there is a specific law in a case of prolonged absence,unfortunately could not find it.Any idea?!

Maybe because if person was away for prolonged period of time 1-2 years he/she should reapply...I think I read somewhere..So this way they kind of know...

Recently we were going through Abu Dhabi. Immigration guy kept looking at my wifes passport, pointing at the stamp and asking questions. In all fairness to him I think STAMP looks primitive with all that rollerball pen writing and not a single word what is for and who for, i.e EU family,work permit ...

Absolutely correct.
I applied 3 times and never produced health insurance.

Just go to your local immigration office in the police station with the original letter that you recieved last year
Zen, people should apply in Burgh Quay if they live in Dublin.
For anyone outside Dublin rules may differ.
