Re: Am I a British citizen?

I am afraid I am not able to answer that question, but some of our members from the US, such as @sunburn may be able to help when they next log in. You don’t need anyone in the UK as a countersignatory . Mine were a US army captain and a realtor . In my view, this amounts to something that’s not re...

Re: UKM application from Canada

I'm not a Canadian nor did I go through the process during Covid (mine was in 2018) but my recollection is that they state it will take up to 90 days. I emailed them 1.5 months after approval (at Citizenship.Support@homeoffice.gov.uk) . They emailed me back a week later to tell me the certificate ha...

Re: UKM application experience and timeline

When applying for the passport, did you guys send your current home country passport? I thought we would have to send off our current passports again but the guidance on the website kind of makes me think I just need to send full colour copies of every page of my current and expired passports. I di...

Well, you'll have to get whatever official documentation is required to prove her identity. Please check with your local registrar's office or the place where her name change was recorded.

Just send her marriage registration certificate listing the change of surname. I sent that along with my mothers birth certificate since her married name appears on my birth certificate.

Re: UKM application experience and timeline

Right you are on sending documents in, I noticed that after I posted. I went ahead and paid online, believing you were correct, and once I picked the verify identity through document it specifies that my confirmer must be: 1) 18+; 2) working or retired from a recognized profession; and 3) since I'm...

Re: UKM application experience and timeline

Interesting, I was going off of this page: https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/help/confirming-identity For the citizenship I was able to use two US-based attorneys I know, wasn't sure if I'd be able to do that for the passport. Did you apply online? I was hoping to do that to speed things along an...

Re: UKM application experience and timeline

I have received my UK citizenship, and am interested in applying for my passport. One problem, I don't know how to have my identity verified. The requirements include that the person who verifies your identity live in the UK, have known you for 2 years, and not be related to you. Well, I've lived i...

Re: UKM Eligibility

My mother never held a British passport. She was born there and spent her childhood there, and then moved to India as a dependent listed on her parents passport. She has her birth certificate from GRO listing her birth in a London hospital in the late 1950s, which is sufficient proof of UK citizensh...

Re: UKM Eligibility

Renewing your mother's British passport can jeopardize her residency in India, assuming that's where she lives now. Indian immigration law permits latent claims to other nationality, but application for a foreign passport is an act that causes automatic loss of Indian nationality, and she would bec...

Re: UKM Eligibility

I can empathize. It's the same for my mother. She's never gone back to UK since she moved to India in the late 1960s , as she cannot get a visa to enter UK on an Indian passport, and cannot apply for a British passport without the BOI flagging her status and causing fines to accrue. There are ways t...

Re: UKM Eligibility

Proof of Right of Abode has always been a non-negotiable requirement for UKM. This is because British Citizens have right of abode. UKM only accords British Citizenship. It does not accord British nationality without right of abode (i.e. British Overseas Citizen status). Thus any UKM applicant has t...

secret.simon: thanks for those corrections . Indeed crown service isn’t relevant to UKM. The Notes in Page 5 of the guidance document covers the 2nd condition in page 4, ie the question of mothers’ prior ineligibility to pass on citizenship to child. The RoA requirement is and has always been a stan...

Re: UKM Eligibility

I understand your argument - ‘she had a CUKC passport issued in 1970 and this proves she was registered’. However that is not true. Your mother doesn’t require registration to have CUKC status . She gained CUKC status at birth, so each subsequent passport until 1970 does not offer any new informatio...

Crown service in general is four things: * Military * Overseas civil service * Colonial service * Diplomatic personnel Also, as mentioned, they need to have been recruited into that service in the UK. For example, British Army commission in UK vs commission into British Indian Army in India - the la...

I’m Indian born and a British Citizen through the UKM route . However my situation was simple since my mother was born in London . My mother was born July 1950 in India, to a British Father and Mother who immigrated to India in 1947. Both my mother's parents were born in Scotland,...

You shouldn’t have any problem with the UKM route, given that your mother is UK born and the dates involved (quite similar to my own) . It’s simply a matter of time .

Re: UKM been in uk 40 years

It’s not clear what exactly you’re seeking advice regarding . Is it the validity of your claim to seek the UKM route ? If so, that depends on the details. Which year were you and your mother born, and where ? If you’re interested in timelines, generally applicants take 3-4 months to have the notice ...
