My appointment was very good o have been granted 2and half year visa .
I did not bring any solicitor it was easy and straight forward , they did not ask me about my appointment been after my visa expired date.

Yes, if you cancel, you lose the fee and have to pay again. Date of application is the date of your appointment, regardless of what the email or online confirmation says.
