One self addressed special delivery envelope is fine for all the applications. It takes upto 2 weeks if you decide to do it by post.

You (Tier 1 visa holder) will need to file for ILR and your wife can be included in your application and not the other way around.

1. The visa extension depends on the visa expiry date and not on the residence duration. If you think that you will not be qualified for visa extension because you were not in UK long enough, the dependent's stay in UK is irrelevent. Even ILR qualification depends on the main applicant's stay in UK ...

Historically speaking, market slows down in December and picks up in January. However, you might get lucky with contracting, as sometimes there is an urgent requirement. So, keep trying but at the same time don't lose hope if you donot find job in next two months. By the way, when did you come to uk?
