FAQ Foreign Birth Registration

Hi Folks, I noticed over the years that the same questions tend to come up fairly often in the main FBR Thread - due to the nature of the chat, tips often get lost, so I thought this was a good place to share - please feel free to add your own Q&A/Tips - but avoid dates as the other thread does that...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

However, it seems to leave the situation that our children, who are all under 5, wouldn't be entitled as we had not registered as a foreign births before they were born. That to me seems a little strange, if both your parents are eligible but the children aren't. I understand there must be a cut of...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

Thanks for your help! Can I just ask where the passport instructions clearly state that a copy of passport is okay? I managed to dig out this from the final passport application paperwork - it's contradictory in places, however I took the below as being ' true' and it worked for me When you apply y...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

Thank for you the timely responses, gentleman. Both are much appreciated. Aside from those two discrepancies, I feel my path to citizenship is rather straightforward. Do you think the DFA will ask for clarification and if so, what would you do, if you were in my position? I would wait and see perso...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

Hello to everyone, I'm just starting my FBR process and collecting documents. On the Irish government website the instructions on the photograph requirement is a bit lacking. I see most people in this thread have already begun the process so I'm posting to ask specifics about the photographs. First...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

I'm in a similar position of not being able to provide my grandparent's photo ID. My maternal grandfather is still alive but completely uncontactable; my grandparents divorced when my mother was a teenager, and that was the last time she ever saw him - I've never met him. I emailed the Irish embass...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

I had a question I hadn’t thought of until now. When I land in a country with my Irish passport does that country only see my Irish details so it will look like it’s my first flight? We had very similar timelines in the end - Congratulations! Who knows on your second point - I don't think it's beyo...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

Final post :D I have completed my FBR journey today - passport card and book received - 31m and 15d (2y 7m 15d) after applying for FBR Hopefully this helps anyone still waiting for FBR, to get some idea of when it will be over - times clearly are going down rather than up - so hopefully 31m is a dis...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

I remember some early mid 2019 folks being part of a group of applications that were lost somehow. A few folks posted on here about it, being asked to resubmit documents. I'm wondering if this is related to that because they started on Sept/Oct 2019 when they first reopened in Nov of 2021.Closing i...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

I wonder if anyone has advice - I am I believe entitled to Irish Citizenship through my Irish born Grandfather. However my father ( his son) died in 1983 and his death certificate ( British citizen died in South Africa) was lost long ago and the South African authorities have no records ( 1983 Joha...

Re: Passport Application Discussion 2022

Passport in the post to me 1 month, 1 week and 4 days post application, with a 10 day hold up in the UK. Not too shabby at all after a 29 month wait for citizenship! Passport Received today - didn't know this, but once the Passport & Card have been dispatched the tracker shows tracking info for bot...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

This is just a to heads-up for those applying for passports from the UK. Royal Mail took two weeks to deliver the documents from England to Dublin (they sent them via France!) and packages from Dublin take "a week too ten days to clear customs" in the UK according to Royal Mail. Had the same issue ...

Re: Passport Application Discussion 2022

Couple of interesting points from my application that may help others... Once posted in GB - it took over a week (10 days) to leave the UK - this must be a Brexit issue as it was nowhere near this long before - I have seen others say the same on here and the FBR chat. I also had to submit a customs ...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

Could anyone who already has their passport or applied please give their dates? I'm curious if the 20 Business days turnaround is actually to be believed, because after the FBR turnaround time it without a doubt seems too good to be true. :? This is an interesting one, mainly because no one was exp...

Re: Passport Application Discussion 2022

January 2022 is this year so it should be fine. I sent the following: a revenue letter from 2019, a cervical check letter from March 2022 and the naturalization letter that came with the certificate. The revenue letter is old but it can be used as proof of name, while the other 2 as proof of addres...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

I’m so excited to share that I’ve been approved for entry onto the FBR! It’s been a long wait, I originally bookmarked this forum on page 86! It’s the longest I have ever waited for an email, at 2 years 5 months and 1 days (or 29m 1d) - in the end, checking this forum and waiting became something of...

Fingers crossed - it'll feel like real progress if they are processing March 2020 in August.

Ok, fair enough. I take that as informing people that Brexit wouldn’t/shouldn’t impact peoples status/requirement to need an Irish passport from The fallout of Brexit and I agree that when a hard Brexit was announced it would have dramatically increased the number of applications but I also stand b...

Re: Foreign Birth Registration

You said the Irish Gov was discouraging people applying. I said the Irish Government were encouraging people not to apply until the contents (and new citizen rights) of the brexit deal were fully known They were encouraging people not to rush at the time, and advised potential applicants that nothi...
