Just wanted to add my case as well here .Last year when I landed Heathrow,I was not asked for any report , however, when my wife had joined me a month later, she was asked either to get her X-ray done at the airport or to produce her report( if she had one with her). Just got my wife's Tier 1 Dependent visa today via Blue dart. The details are:

Applied on : 24th March 2009
Applied from : VFS, Bangalore
Status changed on VFS Tracking - 17th April 2009
Received the documents - 18th April 2009 via Blue dart courier.

It should not pose any problem as all your names are reflecting in your passport as well as the degree certificate. But you might not know, if Home office is keen on rejecting the visa, they can choose not give points for the qualification.Hence to be on the safer side ,it is better to get a letter ...

You need to come back to India( since you are doing a switch - from dependent to own visa) and then apply for a Tier 1 from India.
