You know your rights and duties and as long you can answer all the questions you are good to go.
DOn't over stay you 180 days limit.

Since I applied in May 2015 I did not get any email notifications other that the one letter with the Biometrics application details.

Is it an issue ?

Avoid troubles

Usually the passport is a property of the government and you should return it if it is expired and has no valid visas and no valid reason to keep it. But this it a matter between you and your country.

Just submit it and make them understand this themselves.

Couldn't you divide the 190 days into 2 different periods/years ? You don't have to wait for your documents to travel. I am not sure if you appeal but appeal will not be good in your case. Emergency cases mean something like you went home for 2 weeks but you had a sudden surgery and needed hospital ...

The ILR is only for one. Your wife is British and she can claim benefits the way she wants.
If she was the dependant applying with you that will be a different story.

I think it is better to give the work address as correspondence address in the form and in the envelopes you provide (if it is not Premium appointment)

They cannot know if you are eligible for ILR as you have to provide also the absences days count and the life in the UK exam certificate.

So if you apply for an extension and you have all the requirements there should be no issues at all.
