If ILR refused can you then extend original visa......timing

Hi there, If for some reason I was refused my ILR can I then apply for an extension of my current UK Ancestry? If I send the ILR in by post then it will take about 2 months for it to come back adn then that would mean my other visa would have expired.... Anyone have experience of this or can help me...
