ILR for tier 1 holder getting married to a British citizen

One of my friend who is a tier 1 holder is getting married to a British citizen.He is in UK for more than 2 years. What is the immigration path now.. Can he apply for ILR/Citizenship.Does he need to change to dependent visa first?

I don't think they care too much if we apply before expiry date.

I applied 8 months before my current expiry date and got it extended from the date of expiry. That means my new visa is valid for 3 years and 8 months.

I believe it depends on the case worker you get .
