For your peace of mind - he can apply for Settled Status as soon as it goes live in March, and by June he should have it (all being well). Yeah I know you're right, it's just the attitude they had. He was told a straight up "we can't employ you" , they hadn't done the verification check until he said they can't refuse him because they don't like his SA passport (which is what they said they had an issue with)
