PhD funding for EEA2

I am a non EEA family member of EEA national residing in the UK. I got my EEA2 in October 2012. I am wondering if anyone tried to get PhD through typical research council funding while on EEA2. The rules for funding are not clear for EEA family members. any experiences or stories around PhD for EEA2 ?

Thanks a lot Jumbo, your response is very helpful (as usual) but could you please elaborate on point C I fail to understand it :( what i understood from your response (correct me if I am wrong) is that only EEA national needs CSI when they are student and non EEA family member doesnt need it anyways...

Thanks a lot I called them today, their response was that we received it but still not processed (standard reply) and if you need COA for some reason you have to send a letter to UKBA European Case Team PO Box 306 Liverpool L2 0QN I just posted a letter to this address and will keep calling them eve...

no response yet, called twice so far, ukba told me that the application is being processed and have to wait for COA, no timeline given :(
