I had 2 months before expiry. I guess you could do the same. I have read a few posts here where they have returned passports of people applied too early (2.5 months). So did not want to take a chance there.

Papafaith: NO, This is for the FLR(IED) HSMP extension for 3 years, The time frames for approval are now about 1 to 2 weeks from what I have read from a few posts here.
