Documents delivered: 11/11/2024 9:35am
Documents acknowledged: 12/11/2024 9:37pm

*additional steps - see below*

Application approved: 18/11/2024 9:29am
Passport printed: 19/11/2024 3:40am
Passport dispatched: 19/11/2024 9:20am
Passport received: 20/11/2024 12:37pm
Documents returned (passport and certificate): 20/11/2024 12:37pm
Additional documents returned: 06/12/2024

Additional info

14/11/2024 10:24am: Received an email about name order on foreign passport not matching the name on application. Was asked to update name on foreign document.
14/11/2024 10:25am: Rang them to explain that this is the cultural naming convention in my country. Was asked to obtain a deed poll to align application name to foreign passport name and show evidence of foreign passport name in use on bank statement, utility bills, etc. Was not given a satisfactory answer.
14/11/2024 10:38am: Used webchat to try and get a more satisfactory answer but was told the same thing regarding deed poll and showing name in use evidence.
14/11/2024 12:58pm: Used webchat to further reiterate cultural naming convention and also my surname IS my surname regardless of which order the foreign passport displays it. Was told my case was being referred to an examiner.

15/11/2024 2:22pm: Used webchat to ask for an update. Was told someone would ring me back by the end of the day. Never received a call.
15/11/2024 2:37pm: Received an email requesting additional documents: bank statement and utility bill.
15/11/2024 6:46pm: Rang to explain I was expecting a phone call but never received. They said their notes showed they tried to ring but there was no answer (not true as I was watching my phone like a hawk all afternoon!!). I reiterate the cultural naming convention and changing the order of my name would require me to travel to my home country and would be unreasonably expensive. I was told to expect to receive a call in the next 1-2 working days.

16/11/2024 10:11am: Rang again to chase up and see if the examiner had reviewed my case. No further information provided but again reiterated the above. Was told that they’ve added a note to get examiner to ring me.
16/11/2024 10:46am: Additional documents posted via Royal Mail Special Guaranteed 1pm. I sent a letter explaining cultural naming convention and included high commission’s explanation of naming convention. Sent evidence that name change can only be done in person in-country and travel there would incur unreasonable costs due to having to take unpaid leave and expensive return flights. Included documents requested as well as mortgage statement, letter of employment, driving licence, HMRC NI number letter and degree certificate to reiterate I have used this name order since moving to the UK.

18/11/2024 9:33am: Additional documents delivered (4 minutes AFTER approval email, so not sure if my additional documents were needed anyway). No acknowledgement of receipt of additional documents. And no one ever rang me back.

After a very stressful few days, thankfully it was all resolved. Seems like the case needed to go to someone with some common sense because ALL this information on naming conventions for my country is on Knowledge Base.

This puts a stop to a very lengthy process with HO with very many unknown parameters. Glad that I've reached the end of it safe and sound

It seems PO is using DHL nowadays which is way better than TNT so they are actually taking feedback seriously.
Before the application was to be approved, I got a notification that my HO travel document is to be canceled and returned to UKVI. Then a day after, got another notification to send my documents to a different place (CORBY!). Sounded erratic, called them to query and they said the notification to resend is not on their system so perhaps it's a mishap.
on Monday morning the application was approved.

I wish they could improve the clarity on how to deal with HO TDs application.

Re: British Passport application processing timelines (only)

Big piece of advice for all those who's applying. Always sent your former passport (foreign passport / travel document) - even though, some people in Post Office, might convince you don't have to. You can face more delay due error like that. :!:

I noticed a lot of people's passport case delayed for further 2 weeks/1 month due that

Me: Hi, my British passport application has been stagnant at Durham for almost eight weeks now. I was informed overnight that my sister was in a serious accident back in Australia and is currently in hospital. Since my Australian passport is with my application, I have no means to travel home to be with her. I contacted the Australian embassy here in the USA and they can only issue me with an emergency passport if I present my Australian birth certificate to confirm my identity. Unfortunately, my birth certificate is also in Durham with my passport application, therefore literally every possible document I could use to get home to my sister is currently stuck in the UK. It is absolutely essential that I revoke my application and have my documents returned to me immediately - I am happy to incur any additional costs required to have them mailed express...are you able to assist me with this?
mgoblue, I'm very sorry to hear about your sister and the subsequent hassles with getting your passport back. Thank you for taking the time to post your experiences and advice for others. Very best wishes to you and your family; I hope you are able to return to Oz.

It's official...we are all in serious trouble...this is the conversation I just had with HMPO advice line: N.B. I am an Australian National (and British citizen by descent) living in the USA.

HMPO: Sorry, the best I can do is put a request for a call back in. If you give me your number, someone will call you within 72 hours to discuss your situation. Please note that even if they agree to return your documents, it will take at least 7 days until you receive them at your address in the USA.

---

What is more ludicrous is the fact that I have already submitted 3 of these call back requests in the past 9 days and, not once, has anyone at HMPO contacted me.

This situation at Durham is absolutely preposterous and I urge every one of you living in the UK to contact your local Member of Parliament immediately - they are the only people with the authority to directly follow up on your passport application. The evidence on this forum overwhelmingly suggests that nothing constructive manifests from calls to the advice line - so bypass them and contact either your MP or the media who are now becoming aware of the gravity of this situation.

You are welcome buddy!!

The amount you need to write is £75.50 (which is £72.50 for passport fees plus the £3.00 for secure return of documents)

IPS are absolutely brilliant, even if you put a completley made up amount, they will still charge you the correct fees. See below extract from their notes:

"If you do not write the correct fee in the instruction, we will still charge the correct fee for the service you have asked for"

In the same document, the IPS says:

"What you can expect from us
Our staff will be polite, helpful and professional
"

I can confirm that the above is an accurate description of their service 8)
Wow, ukba charge a fortune and still provide shambolic service. So glad my dealing with ukba are now over :)

UKBA treats foreign nationals and IPS treats UK nationals - I think that makes the difference
