I agree that there should be strict rules for bogus colleges and students. i think you should be fine with extension as far as you can prove earnings.. I'm not aware of any rule to be at job while applying for extension.

Not sure about ILR.

I've read on the forum that some ppl having problems at the time of ILR because of gaps in visas but as far as you maintain proofs (like HO reference no letter and receipt for post) for submitting your FLR well in time, it should be OK.
