Best plan is come on visit visa, take the KOL test (knowledge of life) and return to USA. Then apply for ILE, cost about £820. Citizenship after one year in UK, cost about £720. Don't you mean 3 years? Also I believe the cut-off for holders of ILE/ILR to apply under the existing citizenship rules...

I'm thinking of just going with the first option. We will travel via ferry and I noticed on the schengen visa there is a admin box that says where the application was made, and one of those boxes says "Border" I'm assuming worse case scenario they will make us fill the paper work in at the border.....

Your separation will have no effect on your naturalisation. You can now apply for naturalsation if you want. Spouses of British citizen qualify after 3 years, hence you are qualified. If you choose not to apply now, and you get divorced before applying for naturalisation, then you will qualify for ...

There is no compulsion for a British Citizen to have a British passport. After all they might not intend to travel internationally. You are British as soon as the Certificate of Naturalisation is handed to you. From that moment, surprise surprise, your wife is married to a British Citizen. Accordin...

It might help if you gave some background to your application. An application for ILR in the UK on the basis of marriage is usually straightforward and pretty quick to be processed.

I don't think you can apply until 4th July 2010. As you can't apply for British Citizenship until you have had ILR for 1 year. Until you get British citizenship (actually attended the ceremony) your wife cannot apply until she has been in the country for 5 years and had ILR for 1 year which I believ...

Surely the other problem with very short visits will be making sure they were in the UK exactly 3 years prior to the day that their application is processed? Absolutely, ...

This is ridiculious. The current government is planing on scrapping the ID card scheme, why cant they abolish this interview process that I reckon to be useless. In answer to 2... Did her original nationality allow dual citizenship? If not then her old passport is invalid. Regardless of this her ILR is no longer valid as British citizens can't have ILR.

Though she is unlikely to have any problems travelling using it even though it is no longer valid.
