I don't think there is exception for widow or widower of a British Citizen. In my opinion, because you are not currently married to a British Citizen so you cannot make application under section 6(2), means under the resident requirement of 3 years. friend of mine applied in first week of June and still waiting for his approval which I applied in Mid July and got approval in Mid oct .. so better you just wait and hopefully you will get approval within couple of weeks. calling HO will not help to expedite your case.

You have to send all current and expired passport to apply for British Passport. They normally send you back within a week. To get the british nationality you have to get the spouse visa and need to spend min 3 years in UK. To get the spouce visa your wife has to prove the earning you mentioned and you yave to pass the english test.
