The only option without OCI is the one you mentioned.
Apply for OCI as soon as you get British PP. Turaround time if done in person is 4 wks, so it should be ready by the time you return after your first visit. Only other option is to apply for OCI in person from Delhi, India while you are there.

You need to call and ask Indian consultate, you may need to have a formal change of name letter to be sent along with surrender of Indian PP.

Normal turn time for surrender is one week and visa is a few days , if done in person from London. I guess from Edinburgh it takes more time as everything is done in London. A child born in the UK to parents one or both of whom are settled in the UK at the time the child is born
is automatically a British citizen and does not need to be registered.

Your cancelled Indian PP with valid UK visa will be returned to you with a new Indian PP. Carry the old one along when you travel outside the UK.

To be able to register as a British citizen use application form MN1 Send the passport alongwith, when its returned and he has a British PP in due course, you can surreneder his Indian PP.
If he is not going to be travelling soon outside the UK he doesnt need ILR.

If youre already an Indian citizen, you do not need a visa. On acquiring British passport, you automatically lose Indian citizenship, hence have to surrender Indian passport. See the VFS site for further details.
