Yes you can engage in any form of employment until your visa is valid for and it does'nt say no employment

You need to apply for a new passport before your old passport expires. Once you get a new passport, inform UKBA about your new passport and they will update their records. Biometric cards usually do not carry your passport details. As a precaution carry both passports while travelling abroad.

I have applied for tourist visa and got it approved within 3 days. As we both are Indian nationals, it was not much of a hassle for them to grant visa for our kid.
