I don't think there is a minimum amount of funds needed, but to be on the safe side I'm going to take savings account statements for my appointment.

From my experience, not very easy at all. I tried to add my wife onto my appointment but the lady on the phone said that there was no way to do that. I don't think so. I had the same experience, started looking 2 weeks ago for appointments for me and the wife for next week and there were plenty available for Croydon. Finally got very lucky with saturday 18th appointment.
