Seeking Advice on FLR Before Switching to Skilled Worker Visa for 10-Year ILR Route

Post by ganeshvegesna » Sat May 10, 2025 8:30 pm

Hello,

I came to the UK in January 2018, so I’ve been here for 7 years and 4 months now. I completed two Master’s degrees and then switched to a PSW (Graduate) visa, which is valid until 1st June 2025.

I’m planning to apply for ILR under the 10-year long residence route. Currently, I’m trying to secure a sponsored job. One company is willing to sponsor me, but they mentioned the process could take around 4 months to complete.

My question is: Can I apply for an FLR (Further Leave to Remain) visa to bridge the gap and remain in the UK legally during this period, and then switch to a Skilled Worker visa once the sponsorship is ready? Also, would applying for an FLR have any negative impact on my future ILR application under the 10-year long residence route?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Which FLR visa do you plan to apply for? And are you eligible for it?

If you plan to apply for ILR on the 10 year route anyway, keep in mind that continuity of residence is maintained on the 10 year route if
(a) you leave the UK before the end of your visa, AND,
(b) return to the UK within six months on the same or a different visa.

So you may want to look at returning to your country of habitual residence before your visa expires and return on a work visa.

Wait for others to advise further.
