EU Settlement Scheme & Non-EU Family - Am I Missing Something?

Post by Barnatistuta » Fri Apr 12, 2019 6:34 pm

Hi,

So, under the EU Settlement Scheme, citizens of any of the other 27 EU countries can apply for cost-free, indefinite pre-settled/settled status for their non-EU family, all the way up to great-grandparents and all the way down to great-grandchildren. Fair enough in my humble opinion. Family is important.

However, British citizens themselves cannot even apply for such indefinite settled status for their non-EU spouse, let alone any other family members. We have to go through a very long-winded, extremely expensive and demanding process that can last 5-10 years just so our spouse can live with us.

Is this not giving citizens of the other 27 EU countries better UK residency rights than British citizens themselves? Why would any country give foreign citizens better residency rights than their own citizens? Seems bizarre to me. Or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance.
