Settlement Visa Help

Post by ahmed.sarheed » Mon Aug 16, 2010 3:33 pm

Hello,

I am a British Citizen, living in London, UK where I have been a resident for 20 years or so. I recently went to Iraq to marry. I was advised before travelling to Iraq that The British Consulate in Iraq does not process settlement visas for naitonals, and that I must go to neighbouring countries to process the application. So we were advised to go to Turkey under the pretence that it has the fastest application turnover times for that type of visa for my wife. So we spent the weeks before preparing all the paperwork needed for the documentation for the application, and we got married in Iraq and left soon after to Turkey for a honeymoon and to process the application at the same time. I was not allowed into the Visa Application Centre, only my wife, and to our surprise, they told her that since she is not a Turkish citizen, she cannot apply for settlement to the UK. They convinced her that the only way she could be with me was to go ahead with a General Visit visa and they helped with the application. She stated that she didnt have all the documentation needed for the General Visit Visa, and they assured her it was not a problem as she had my pay details and bank details, and that was the most important thing.

Needless to say, her application has been rejected and the reason was that the British Consulate did not believe she only wanted to visit me, so they were wary of her intentions to come to the UK.

I have since returned to London as I cannot take time off work anymore, and I have sent her back to Iraq to be with her family until I re-gather my thoughts and documentation alike.

What I need to know is can I not apply to bring my wife over to the UK to make things easier. Surely as a British national, I am granted something so simple as to bring over my wife from a different country. Also, if that is not permitted, I know that she must go to Jordan now to apply, but I have now been told that they will not accept Iraqi Marriage Certificates even if they have been verified by the Foreign Ministry and translated accordingly. Does that mean I must travel to Jordan to get yet another Marriage Certificate? Is that even possible?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am on wits end with tying up loose words from everyone.

Kindest Regards
