Sending money to India Being a British Citizen

This is an area for the discussion of matters related to issues about moving from one country to another. Examples could be about money transfer, moving and packing, validity of driving licence, etc..

It is not a general non-immigration, free-for-all area.

Sending money to India Being a British Citizen

Post by bhardwajkapil81 » Thu Dec 28, 2017 8:08 am

hi all,

I have recently acquired my British Citizenship and was hoping to wait for my OCI before I can send some money back home for family support.

I wanted to know if as a British Citizen (and not being an OCI yet) can I send money back home through bank transfer or money transferring agencies like WU.

Many thanks,
Kapil

Why would it make a difference?

I am not sure whether it makes a difference or not; however, unlike UK India doesn't allow dual citizenship and being a British Citizen not sure whether I can send money outside UK. Not an issue of tax or declaring it authorities but just wanted to check if anyone here thinks that it can be considered as money laundering or something like that.

You are overthinking it. You can send money.

As long as you have an address and phone number in UK, you can go to a Post Office-Moneygram, fill the form, Cash or Debit Card and send money to India. I dont think post office staff even ask your citizenship or visa status. They might be having some upper limit of permissible amount though.
