Post by a_bentz » Sat Feb 09, 2008 9:16 am

Hi there, does anybody know how many times South African Citizenship can get passed down to outside sa born children?

Thank you

I'm not sure if there is any limit, providing the person is registered as a South African citizen before the next generation is born.

Not sure how much of an issue that should be to you - the South African passport is rapidly depreciating in value as a travel document, latest rumour being that the U.K. is shortly to impose a tourist visa requirement.

It works exactly the same as British citizenship, i.e. you can only pass on your South African citizenship to your children if you obtained your South African citizenship by birth or naturalisation. They will then be South African by descent. However, someone who is South African by decent cannot pass on their South African citizenship unless their children are born in South Africa.

Or more simply put, at least every second generation will have to be born in South Africa in order to keep the line of citizenship going.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

thanks dawie,

thats interesting to know. just couldnt find much info about it and thought as long as you resgistered the birth you could just keep passing it on down the decending line. thanks for your reply.

That can be very important too, though. Will your children be (or are they) eligible for South African citizenship?

hi christophe,

i was just wondering about the whole sa community in the uk with a new generation of outside sa born children, if their past would be lost which i now know does not last.

Would the same apply for adoptions?

Dawie, quick question....would the same principles apply in the case of adoptions?
