South African with ILR travelling to Ireland

Post by Leo_Swan » Thu May 12, 2005 11:22 am

Hello All,

The company i work for in UK wants to send me to Ireland for 5days to do a job for an client.

I have 2 questions:

1. Do i need a visa or is it a case of getting on the plane and passport control will grant entry?

2. Do i need a work-permit or such to do the job for the client, even though it is billed by the company i work for?

As always, thanks in advance for your guidance.

Regards

Leon

Are you going to Northern Ireland or Republic of Ireland?

I dont think South African citizens require a Visa to go to Rep of Ireland. (but please check) :?

If you dont require a Visa then just get in as a visitor and do your business (dont disclose intentions to IO) - alternatively if you want to get a Business Visa/work permit - it might be a very long process for only 5 days work authorisation - the choice is yours!!!!

1. South African nationals do not require a visa to travel to the ROI as a visitor for less than 3 months. Visitor includes aspects of business related travel. IMHO that you are going to do a specific job pushes into a grey area that may very well require formal employment authorisation. Why are you the one doing the job? Is it training? Is it part of an after service agreement? Who is paying for this job and your accomodation? What is the relationship between the two organisations? Ask the Irish consulate in London whether entry as a visitor is acceptable. It would be a huge inconvenience for you to be refused entry on this basis by an immigration officer who has final authority on entry.

2. Misrepresentation of material facts to facilitate entry into a foreign country is a very bad idea - it may come back to bite you in the proverbials.

Good luck

This post is both an immigration and an EU related query - it will be re-located to the correct forum accordingly.

Hi Kayalami

I am intending to find out from the Irish consulate anyhow, i was just hoping someone had already this type of situation.

So here as some more info for you:

I work for a company that sub-contacts for HP and others alike, now in this case it is a job for HP. They plan to have a vender-desk sutuation and needs someone in our company to accompany them as Tech-support. (Yep i know on there own products they make, it is funny) I have done it for them in the UK and now they are going to have a few days in Ireland. HP UK pay us and us (being my boss), pays me

Anyway, i will still find out how this stands leagally

Agreed.

Forum Members, please be advised that Iit is strongly advised that there is no misrepresentation of information to IO when seeking entry in another country. However, it is usually advisable not to present information that may prejuidice your case. Come on guys - we only go throuigh this earthly life only once (it some times helps to be economical with the truth).

It is always best to play it safe.

Good luck
