Do I still have the right to a British citizenship ?

Post by aridhab » Tue Mar 07, 2006 11:11 pm

I was born in UK in 1972. I then moved to India when I was 5 years old after my father ( a naturalized british citizen) died. My mother( Indian citizen) under the grief couldn't deal with all the scenarios and did not register me with the Indian authorities. My mother lost my british birth certificate in a burglary.

Now later i came to know that I can ask for the british birth certificate from the concerned authorities . Now my question is am i entitled to a british citizenship ? Do I still have the right to claim it ?

There's no doubt that a person born in UK in 1972 is a British citizen (assuming that father wasn't a diplomat accredited in UK at the time).

BUT you might have an uphill job convincing the British High Commission that you are the person to whom the newly-issued British birth certificate refers - particularly given that your Indian passport says you were born in India.

You should expect to be asked to produce a lot of documentary evidence dating from all periods of your life - school reports, photos of you growing up, etc etc...

aridab's post does not state that her indian passport mentions she was born in india?

what does your passport state aridhab?
born in india or the UK?
