Surrender of Indian Passport

Hi

I have a question. On changing citizenship from Indian to British National, I would need to surrender my Indian Passport. Now do I necessarily have to surrender my passport and apply for OCI from UK or I can apply from any other country where I may be stationed/working at that time ?
