Swiss work permit for Swiss residency permit holder

May I asked generally how long it will take to obtain a Swiss work permit
for a non-EU citizen living in Switzerland with a valid residency permit (through marriage)? Can the person starts to work for the company right away after the work permit appilcation form is filed, or has to wait till the permit is granted? You input would be greatly appreciated.
