Tier 2 General Extension How many days earlier can I apply

Hi,

Could anybody help me by providing information on:

How many days before expiry of my current leave as Tier 2 General, I can apply for an extension.

I have gone through on UKBA website and it says this
"You should apply as soon as possible, and before your current permission to stay expires."

However it does not say how many days.

Can I apply for an extension more than a month earlier?

I recently applied three months earlier, had no problems.
