It has to be an original copy.

But if you have lost the originals, but your partner's name is mentioned on your passport, you can write a detailed covering letter and you should be ok.

My partner name is not on my passport but he is in UK on a dependent visa. He was issued a dependent visa based on the original marraige certificate but then after i have lost the certificate.

Is it still ok to provide them certified copy with a covering letter?

The question is - what if UKBA refuses the application for not providing an original marriage certificate?

Your assumption that - since your spouse is already in UK as a dependant and you'd provided original marriage certificate at that time, so UKBA should not need to see it again - carries a risk of refusal, depending on what the caseworker thinks he / she must see as documentary evidence in support of the application.

The guidance is very clear on the issue - only original documents are accepted.

Unfortunately, no one call tell you whether it will work or not. There is a risk and it is your call whether you want to mitigate it (or not).

IMHO ....
