tier 4 -partway through the academic year- amount of funds

Post by sagareva » Fri Oct 07, 2011 6:59 pm

Hi all,

need help calculating amount of funds needed.

a tier1 dependant, who is currently a student in a BA course at a university, is going to travel abroad over Christmas holiday to apply for Tier4 instead (there are reasons for that).

she is currently in first year (just started), and half of tuition has been paid to the university for the current year (second half due in January)

in relation to the amount of funds we have to show in tier4 application for tuition expenses, will it be enough to show funds necessary to pay to the end of current academic year?

or will they require funds for the next year?

(please do not write about living expenses funds, I know about those. I am particularly interested in the tuition portion now)

the guidance is unclear on this, as it says "if the student is partway through the academic year, they have to show funds until the end of the current academic year, OR for the next academic year, if they plan to return to their studies at the start of the next academic year"

so I am confused, as she is planning to finish this year first and THEN obviously continue next year as this is a 3-year course

appreciate help from those who have applied in a similar situation

I am not sure how the guidance is unclear, if she is coming back to resume her studies part way though the year, she needs to show the remaining fees for the rest of this academic year. If she were due to return at the start of the next academic year (not part way though the year) she would need to show the fees for the next academic year.

You say that you do not want any comment on maintenance, but, for the avoidance of doubt, given that you were confused about the tuition fee issue, she will need to show the maximum amount of maintenance (£600/£800 for each month of the course up to a maximum of 9 months as she will not have current entry clearance/leave under tier 4 when she makes her application, so does not meet the 'established presence' requirement.

yeah i know about maintenance -- I have all that. It is tuition I am unclear about -- I tend to agree with you, based on the reading of the guidance. but elsewhere on UKBA website they also have a page from which it overall appears precisely that "tuition through the end of the current year" would only apply also to those with established presence. i suppose it is a misunderstanding (they simply didnt envision someone who is currently on a course suddenly switching to tier4) and that it will still work for us.

Tuition fees have nothing to do with established presence. In any case the university will put the fees on the Cas and this what ukba will look at.
