Tier 4 visa to marriage -- what happens student fees?

Post by sinatra_blue » Sat Nov 19, 2011 11:56 pm

Hi,

Long story short, back in September I met a girl from Argentina. We'd been talking online for almost 5 years and decided to finally meet up. She stayed with me in the UK for two months and we got on fantastically well. I'm pretty sure she's the love of my life.

Now I would like to sponsor her Tier 4 visa in the UK. I'm doing this as a student visa rather than rushing in and getting married because I know when she comes back it won't be a holiday as before so this is a way of 'testing the water' for both of us.

I do alright financially, but not well enough to pay the entire fees for a 3 year course (£30k). So I was wondering, if she were to come over on a Tier 4 visa, and we get married, can I/she pay more reasonable student fees?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't quite understand the logic of saying you don't want to rush into matters and therefore your g/f applying for a student visa but then you marrying anyway to try to save money on tuition fees.

1. You can't 'sponsor' your girlfriend's tier 4 visa. She or her parents would need to have the required funds (first years tuition fees + 9 months in living costs (either £5400 or £7200) in order for her to get a tier 4 visa - read the link posted by Vinny for more info.

2. She won't qualify as a home student purely by marrying you (assuming you are British?), unless she has been living in the UK/EEA 3 years before the course starts

In any case - fees for home students will be up to £9000 a year from next year so you wouldn't be saving much anyway.
