Tier 2 Visa + wife dependant, impact on mortgage?

Post by rp.pratt1 » Mon Dec 08, 2014 9:35 am

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could provide some guidance please.

I am currently on a Tier 2 General visa (company sponsored) and my wife is on a similar visa. I have recently tried to acquire a mortgage, for which I've been successful, but for many reasons the sale didn't go through.

My wife is thinking of switching to a dependant visa but still work and earn money herself. If she did move into a dependant visa, do I have to 'declare' this whilst applying for a new mortgage to the lender? i.e. despite she earning herself and financially being independent, do I still have to declare that she's my dependant just because that's the visa category? I've been told by friends that the 'dependant' question that lenders ask is purely from a financial perspective; i.e. if I have to financially provide for someone else as well which is not the case here. If my wife moving as my dependant would affect how much lenders can lend to me, then we do not want to go down this route yet.

Any guidance would be much appreciated! :)

Many thanks,
PR.

We got our mortgage approved in jan 2012 and I was a dependant of my spouse then. We were not asked any questions with regards to my dependant visa status. I think they may only do employment status checks (salary slips, how long employed etc) on her.
