Tax reference number... please help.

I asked my employer for tax reference number & i was given
XXX/XXXXXXX(where X stands for numbers).
Is that the right format??

Looks right - my tax office reference had a letter in it and was one digit shorter, but apart from that the format looks identical: XXX/LXXXXX
